Michael Elkan Burl Wood Jewelry Box. Magnificent jewelry box by sculptor and artist Michael Elkan. Handcrafted from a large piece of Oregon Birdseye Maple Burl Wood, it has three smooth sides, and features an amazing live edge front. The interior is spectacular as well. The lid has a recessed center, the bottom is divided into three sections, and into this fits a lovely divided, six compartment tray. A pair of unique brass hinges are counter sunk, and connect the top to the bottom. It measures from the underside: 3.75″ high, 10.5″ wide, and 8.5 deep. It is in excelIent vintage condition, particularly considering the hundreds of tiny points that protrude from the live edge. One bottom edge has several indents that may be dings, or may have been there from the beginning. It is hard for me to tell, but the last photo shows this. This is the largest box by Michael Elkan that I have seen on the internet, as well as being the only one I have found that has a separate removable tray. Master woodworker Michael Elkan opened his Oregon studio in 1980 and created handcrafted wooden furniture and accessories until turning to other artistic pursuits in 2002, at which time he closed his studio. Sadly, Michael passed away in 2014. His works remain highly collectible.
