Vintage Italian Lift Top Music Wood Inlay Jewelry Box Table. About your music box. The ancient art of inlay. Inlay (marquetry) began with the Benedictine Monks in the 6th and 7th. Seventeen Century craftsmen in Sorrento incorporated this type of design and construction into furniture built by them for the Royal Court at Naples. Present construction techniques and design modes were achieved with the introduction of floral designs by Guiseppe Maggiolini and the use of veneer in marquetry, begun in 1877 by Francesco Grandi, director of the Scuola d’Arte di Sorrento. The Musical movements are also hand made, with each tiny pin being fitted in exactly the correct spot so that it will strike the proper note at the precise split second necessary for beautiful pitch, tone and harmony. If properly cared for (please do not overwind), this lovely art treasure represents an investment which will always yield ever-increasing dividends in both pleasure and value. Size: 14 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ tabletop. Legs are 14 1/2 tall. Total table height 16 1/2. Reuge Swiss Musical Movements. One small area on lid is missing veneer (see last photo).
