This is an early c. 1930’s Japanese Showa haribako sewing box with four drawers and a compartment on top. The box might also have been used for jewelry or other valuables, as well as sewing implements for repairing kimonos, etc. The original pin cushion is contained in the top compartment. There is a slot at the top of one side which held a bamboo measuring device, which is not present. The box measures 9″ H x 11.5″ x 7 deep, not including drawer pulls. The front is made from exotic persimmon wood with a characteristic beautiful grain. I believe that the insides of the drawers are made of paulownia (kiri) wood. The sides, back and top might be Japanese cypress (hinoki) or cryptomeria (sugi). The box is in generally very good condition for its age of about 90 years. There are a couple of minor scratches and a small loss in the veneer at the bottom of one drawer. The drawers slide open smoothly, and the top section with the lid opens easily.
