RARE MID-LATE 19TH CENTURY ANGLO-INDIAN (BRITISH IMPERIAL ADMINISTRATION) ANTIQUE FANCY, ORNAMENTAL CUT-OUT, RETICULATED BRASS & HARDWOOD, LARGE DECORATIVE JEWELRY /TRAVEL BOX, with HINGED LID & INTERIOR DIVIDED COMPARTMENTS, HIDDEN INTERIOR CHAMBER, ORNATE BRASS KEY PLATE & SOLID BRASS. [From B r i t i s h Raj or B r i t i s h Crow n rule in In d ia]. Mid-late 19th century In di an -made decorative wood furniture & decorative accessories during B r i t i s h Crown rule. 6 14″ Height x 18″ Width x 11 12 Depth. Estate fresh and never before available to the marketplace. This mid-late 19th century An g lo – In di an (former Br it ish Imperial administration of In di an affairs) highly decorative cultural artifact, had one previous owner and was tucked away from view for well over one-hundred years. It made its way from In d ia to Bri ta in and then to a finely appointed early estate in the northern Massachusetts community of Pepperell, MA, where it was first discovered and subsequently removed from. This exquisite An g lo- In di an jewelry/travel box is quite large, measuring 6 14″ in height by 18″ in width by 11 12 in depth. It’s all original except for the lid’s brass hinges, which appear to have been replaced at some point in time. The box is otherwise completely original. The box is fashioned out of local In di an hardwood and is trimmed out with incredibly ornate, decorative brass reticulated filigree. There’s a very nice, exaggerated front brass key plate, highly decorative, reticulated brass corner brackets and two solid brass ornamental, hinged, side lifting handles. The reticulated brass doesn’t suffer any measurable loss or damage and still has its original brass patina. It’s absolutely magnificent. This isn’t a pedestrian or ordinary box but an extraordinary one, produced in In d ia during the long period of Br it ish colonial rule, also referred to as the Br it ish Raj or Br it ish Crown rule. This box was clearly produced and intended to be used by a person of great means or perhaps a Br it ish representative of the Crown in In d ia, his wife, daughter or other family member. It points to a propensity for regal excess and the once held belief that the sun never set on the once mighty Br it ish colonial empire. This incredible jewelry/travel box is from that era, when it seemed that God himself, was somehow an anglophone and literally bestowed upon the Br it ish the world’s wealth and the spoils of conquest, of which Grea t Bri tain was its chief architect. Of course, much has changed since the inception and realization of this magnificent box. Simply splendid and incredibly beautiful. Not just a mere decorative object but a veritable tour de force.
