Please scroll down to see the photos. 20 wide x 15 deep x 7 tall, this is a wonderful antique Victorian velvet jewelry box. The lid opens by moving the bottom silver knob to the right, and lifting the lid by the top silver knob, which is stationary. The velvet has some wear, but, for the age, its in extraordinary condition. I would estimate it was made between 1860 – 1890. The lid is heavy because it has a mirror on the inside, as well as a decorative plate made of pewter or aluminum on the top. Due to the weight, I believe it’s made of pewter. There is just one split in the wood on the bottom of the box, as shown in the photos, but of course this doesnt show unless you turn it upside-down, and it doesn’t compromise the integrity – the box is sturdy. It also has a small black stain on the right side of the top, and some caked dirt on the back corner. I believe there were some sort of pillars originally attached to the front corners, which could be replaced with cylinders of some sort, if you so choose, but it’s pretty as it is. The silk and velvet interior is in fine condition. The mirror has some minor black spots, as shown in the 2nd photo below. It’s a wonderful antique jewelry box, and would be great to store, and display, your antique jewelry collection!
