This deep plum colored lacquered Japanese box is gorgeously decorated with 20 cast copper/bronze Menuki, the small ornaments that were used under the windings (tsukai – maki) on the handle of a Japanese sword. The Menuki represent symbols, ornaments, occupations, animals (including a dragon), floral bundles, etc. I wish I would have had enough pictures allowed to show each one because they ae all delightful masterpieces of the craft of Menuki marking. The box is 6.75″ wide x 7 1/4″ deep x 2 1/4 thick. The box is in good condition and the Menuki are all in great condition. I date them all to the 1890’s.
