Calculated elsewhere in the world with a discount to help with the cost. This is an original Michael Elkan burled wood carved box. I’ve been told this is one of his earlier works, as later in life his boxes were marked “Michael Elkan Studio”. The box measures a hefty 11″ x 7.25″ x 3.5… Not the largest of his creations but up there on the larger side. The two halves come from the same original piece of wood, and the base is single-carved without any cuts or fixtures aside from the hardware holding the hinges and the stop-chain. It’s amazing he was able to create the thin walls between compartments without cutting them separately and gluing them in place… Certainly one of the key features of his boxes. The fact that he was able to hide the hinges and stop-chain from exterior view, all while creating a box whose top sits flat against the base… It’s the creation of a master artist. Elkan was born in 1942 and sadly passed away in 2014; h. Is signature is burned into the bottom side of the base. His care, precision, and love of the wood is seen and felt in every one of his creations. Equal care has been taken of this box over the decades, as it was showcased behind glass rather than used for jewelry or keys. There are no dents, no dings, no scratches, no damage and no deterioration to the piece. It’s been carefully loved and oiled every few years, although in my opinion I believe it may be ready for it’s next wipe down with your choice of wood oils. I suspect there is some “deepness” to the top’s grain which could be brought out. There’s a lot of “motion” in the grain and I think it will be truly beautiful with just the lightest amount of care. The piece is exquisite as it is, of course, and folks tend to have their own individual methods of bringing the grain out, so we’ll leave it exactly as is.
