Absolutely beautiful jewelry box made of rare southeast Asian coromandel wood. Made in England in the 19th century. The pattern of the wood is striking. Coromandel’s unusual and beautiful grain was selected by English craftsmen for the finest furniture and boxes. There is a mother of pearl shield escutcheon and diamond-shaped mother of pearl accents not only on the lid, but on the front and back as well. There is a lock but no key. All hardware is original, including stop hinges to prevent the lid from falling backward. Inside is a lift-out tray with divided compartments, lined in the same blue velvet fabric that lines the bottom and inside lid. There is minor wear to some of the fabric. Felt has been placed on the bottom to prevent scratching when placed on wooden furniture. Slight dings commensurate with age do not detract from the overall beauty of this fine box. Delicate proportions, measuring 8 inches wide, by 5 3/8 inches deep, 3 3/8 inches high, allows it to fit on any table or dresser. An excellent antique box.
