If you’ve followed us for a while you know I’m a big fan of the old hand carved “Black Forest” items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, “fruits of the hunt”. I’ve got more to list so look through the vast collection. I’ve just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques – from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy – these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan’s craft of carving wood. We offer here a superb 19th century hand carved Black Forest gloves or document box, perfect to use as a jewelry box, of course, but the original use for this form was to store pairs of gloves. I love these for old love letters, family letters, tied in a ribbon, too. You’ll find the perfect use. I know many gentlemen keep their wrapped cigars inside. Some just display the boxes. The one you see here is from the Animalier era, presents a fine pair of pheasants up top. Raised on cabriole legs, it’s a fine example of the wonderful old boxes that often were Grand Tour souvenirs of the regional carver’s artistry. Measurements noted on photos but also here: 12.5″ long, 9″ tall in all, and 5.5 deep front to back. The box has a working lock with the original key in place, which is harder and harder to find. Very good condition for age and type. The original interior silk velvet remains fully intact and in nice clean form (pardon a little white dust, static cling in winter grabs it from the air and the lights catch it). I’ll give it a once over with tape to remove that before sending to its new owner. There is one notable flaw, that being that the head of the upper bird has at some point been broken off. There’s a clean line visible upon close inspection showing the old restoration there. It would appear to my eye that the head has perhaps been carved, replaced. It has a very slightly different color and look to it. This impacts the price of our box already. Otherwise a chipped tip of leaf here, there. But in all a really lovely old beauty of a box.
